the Baths: Blending history & modern Living
The Kent Street Baths, Birmingham's first public baths, had their foundation stone laid on October 29, 1849, and opened on May 12, 1851, despite being unfinished. Located near the town center, construction faced challenges from underground springs, leading to increased costs that ultimately reached £23,000 by 1852. The building featured sixteenth-century architectural design with various bathing facilities, including private baths and swimming areas.
Over the years, the baths expanded to include men's and women's private baths, Turkish baths, and a central mechanical laundry by 1897, with a dedicated Women's Swimming Baths opening in 1914. The original structure was demolished in 1930, making way for a new building that included a Gala Swimming Bath, which became popular until it was destroyed during a raid in December 1940. As plans for the future of the Kent Street site progress, the historic significance of the baths remains an important part of Birmingham's heritage.
